Discover the Forgotten Rail Trail
History
Hidden within the Budgalong property lies a remarkable piece of history — a private rail trail built during the Great Depression that never saw a single train pass through. Today, this untouched pathway offers a unique cycling experience through quiet countryside, winding past old tunnels, grazing sheep and remnants of another era.
The trail follows part of the Sandy Hollow railway line, constructed in the 1930s by workers seeking employment during difficult economic times. After months of hard labour, the section that runs through Budgalong was never completed for operation and was eventually abandoned, leaving behind tunnels, steel wheels and scattered railway relics that quietly tell the story of the past.
